With the rise in white supremacy, hate crimes and fascism, remembering the not-to-distant past is important. WWII was horrific by every means imaginable. As a person born in 1953, the war did not affect my life, but I’ve read many books about Nazi Germany and the horrors suffered by the Jews, the mentally ill and physically handicapped, the gypsies, the “other.” I’ve read these books in an effort to understand what happened and in an intellectual way I do, but physically and emotionally I just can’t grasp what happened.
